Facilitating EU-Asia industrial cooperation on satellite navigation applications

EU-Asia in FP7 framework

EU-Asia cooperation in the field of GNSS has been and is being supported through different channels. Members of the GNSS.asia consortium and experts have been involved actively or indirectly in most Asia-related activities on GNSS related cooperation in the past years. Thus GNSS.asia project has the capacity to encourage larger participation of Asian GNSS stakeholders in future cooperation projects.  More information on these activities is presented below.

DragonFly - Taskforce on SatNav/ GNSS-enabled Applications in relation to China.

In 2009 GSA initiated a taskforce consisting of applications and China GNSS experts to support GSA/EC in the elaboration of the China GNSS Applications Programme. The objective was to identify synergies and areas of cooperation with China in GNSS-enabled applications, enable discussions with China and common ground for joint activities and to combine concrete Chinese initiatives with an EU approach.

SIDEREUS - Dialogue Concerning EU and Asia on Galileo-based applications.

SIDEREUS addressed European and Southeast Asian companies operating in the aerospace and ICT sectors on satellite navigation applications with a special focus on Galileo. The main objective of SIDEREUS was to establish long-term business and technological co-operation agreements through a series of one-on-one matchmaking meetings between companies, research centres and other organisations operating in the aerospace and ICT sectors.

EU-ASIA in FP7 framework

The Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7) is the European Union’s main instrument for funding research in Europe. FP7, which applies to the years 2007-2013, is the natural successor to the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6),  and is the result of years of consultation with the scientific community, research and policy making institutions, and other interested parties. More information can be found on http://www.cordis.europa.eu/fp7/home_en.html.

Universities, research centres, multinational corporations, SMEs (small to medium-sized enterprises), public administrations, even individuals, from anywhere in the world – all have the opportunity to participate in FP7.

There have been many FP7 projects which promote EU-Asia cooperation. Of particular interest for the scope of GNSS.asia project are FP7 projects established in Asia which enable cooperation in GNSS such as SEAGAL.

SEAGAL - South East Asia centre on European GNSS for international cooperation And Local development.

This FP7 project has set up a collaboration centre “NAVSIS” which is now established as a new link between Europe and South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore) in the framework of satellite navigation and related applications, in particular research and education activities. While it is not the main objective of the GNSS.asia team to be proactive regarding SEA countries, building upon the existence of the NAVSIS Centre - particularly in connection to the promotion of European industries in Asia - could prove to be beneficial.

GNSS.asia project is funded by the European Union within the Seventh Framework Programme under grant agreement no 287244.
