Road Transport

Intelligent road transport systems make up the second most important segment of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) market, accounting for nearly half of its revenues. The GNSS consumer market in the road sector has exploded in the last 5 years with more than 60% yearly growth and prices declining. It is still growing rapidly as vehicles equipped with a navigation device increase from one third of the market to nearly 90% in 2020.

GNSS applications for road transport cover more than in-car navigation: for instance, GNSS-based toll collection systems allow more efficient use of roads, reducing both traffic and environmental effects. Fleet management and logistics may also benefit from the accuracy brought by EGNOS and Galileo by locating, in real-time, trucks, buses, taxis, etc.  This helps optimise resourcesimprove fleet management and reduce consumption of time and fuel.

In addition, innovative applications have been developed. For example, the eCall programme uses GNSS positioning for an automatic, in-vehicle emergency call system that allows emergency services to remotely locate them after an accident. Other new applications such as accident reconstruction or anti-theft systems may also emerge.

Thanks to its improved signals, Galileo will enormously improve road transport applications.
